BRNO AIRPORT hits passenger milestone and prepares for its first long-haul passenger flights

BRNO AIRPORT a.s. has hit a historic milestone, handling over 664,000 passengers during the first 10 months of this year. This exceeds the previous record of 2011, with 558,000 passengers flying over the course of that year. The busiest months were during the summer holidays, which saw over half a million passengers travelling between the start of June and the end of September, a 47% increase compared to last year and up 34% on the pre-Covid year of 2019. The most popular destinations included London, Antalya, and Burgas, as well as resorts such as Marsa Alam and Hurghada in Egypt.

“This season has been both historic and demanding in all respects. We are delighted that the pre-Covid hustle and bustle has returned to Brno–Tuřany Airport and that passengers have been able to take full advantage of the opportunity to visit dozens of destinations from Brno. During the summer months, this manifested itself in a huge influx of travellers, for which we did our very best to prepare. Records tumbled in June and August when we served around 160,000 passengers in each of those months. Nevertheless, we also recorded sizable interest towards the end of the season. In September, over 113,000 passengers flew from Brno and, as of this month, we have just exceeded 600,000 passengers in total,” commented Radek Lang, BRNO AIRPORT a.s. Head of Transport Operations, explaining that although the majority of seasonal flights ceased in September, passengers could still head to Egyptian resorts and Tenerife in October, as the links to Hurghada and Marsa Alam will continue to run until the end of November.

As is traditionally the case, the most popular destination in terms of passenger numbers was London. The year-round connection to Stansted had been used by over 95,000 passengers by the end of October. Second place was occupied by Marsa Alam in Egypt, followed by Antalya in Turkey, Hurghada in Egypt, and Burgas in Bulgaria. “From the information available to us, we know that the range of flights on offer from Brno Airport will be very similar to this year, a total of 29 destinations. As a result, we are optimistic about next year in terms of what we expect and believe that interest in flying from the Moravian metropole is unlikely to deviate from its current positive trajectory,” concluded Radek Lang.

A historic first long-haul connection from Brno Airport and further additions

This winter, Brno Airport will open a brand new chapter in the form of its first long-haul connection to the Thai resort of Phuket. The route will be launched before the end of the year, on the 19th December. The connection will be operated by Neos Airlines, in partnership with travel agency Čedok, and will run once per week. Passengers will fly aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with a total capacity of 359.

Further charter flight additions to the upcoming summer season include Marsa Matrouh in Egypt, Cyprus, and Dalaman on the Aegean Riviera in Turkey.
