Brno Airport closes a successful season with a record number of destinations, plus exotic winter destinations on the horizon

Press release
Brno, 22 October 2024

BRNO AIRPORT’s summer is slowly drawing to a close and may already be considered one of its most successful. Passengers were able to choose from 33 destinations, the most in the airport’s history. Activity will continue into the winter months, which are set to be unusually busy. The regular year-round route to London will be supplemented by two exotic destinations – Phuket in Thailand and Mauritius, a new addition. This broad range of flights is also reflected in the number of passengers processed. From the beginning of January to the end of September, the airport served in excess of 682,000 flyers, a 10% increase on its previous best year of 2023.

“We are delighted that passengers are choosing to fly off on their summer holidays from Brno more than ever before, demonstrated by the high number of passengers handled. It is satisfying that our ever-growing list of destinations can meet this demand. Of course, we also grateful for our long-term partnerships with travel agents and airlines, meaning that it is now possible to fly to three continents from Brno,” commented Milan Kratina, Member of the Board, BRNO AIRPORT a.s.

Traditionally, the destination with the greatest number of passengers is London Stansted. 74,000 passengers had made use of this regular route by the end of September. During the summer, it flies six times per week, and five times per week during the winter. Classic summer destinations with the highest number of passengers include Antalya (Turkey), Marsa Alam, Hurghada (both Egypt), and Burgas (Bulgaria). The Spanish resort of Mallorca was also popular this year, along with this summer season’s new addition, Marsa Matruh on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Other new destinations include Dalaman and Izmir in Turkey, plus Comiso in Sicily.

Flights to Mauritius commence at the start of November

Furthermore, from the start of November, passengers can jet off to another new exotic destination. On 6 November, the first flight to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean will take off. It joins another exotic location, that of Phuket in Thailand, which was added during the last winter season and represented Brno Airport’s first long-haul passenger flight. Both destinations will be served by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a capacity of 359, running on a once weekly schedule.

Flights to exotic destinations will be complemented by the regular route to London Stansted. In February, flights to two Egyptian resorts – Marsa Alam and Hurghada – will resume, and once the summer flight schedules comes back into force (31 March), further holiday destinations will gradually be added. After the winter break, the regular connection to Bergamo in Italy will also return, operated by Ryanair.

120,000+ passengers handled every month of summer

In terms of passengers handled, the busiest month was July, which saw 170,300 flyers. The other summer months of June and August also exceeded the 120,000 mark, whilst September also came close to this figure, with 119,000 passengers. “We always prepare carefully for the main season. Those months are extremely busy for our entire team and we wouldn’t be able to cover them without seasonal workers. In October, there is a lull as the majority of holiday routes suspend their operation. I want to thank our whole team for meeting these challenges with distinction and without any major hiccups,” concludes Jiří Filip, Member of the Board LETIŠTĚ BRNO a.s.
