BRNO AIRPORT CHECKED-IN OVER HALF A MILLION PASSENGERS LAST YEAR. GREECE REMAINS THE MOST POPULAR DESTINATION AND FROM APRIL YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FLY TO BERLIN
Press release
Brno, February 6, 2019
Brno-Tuřany Airport experienced a record-breaking year last year, when after six years it again exceeded the limit of half a million checked-in passengers. Most flights took place during the summer holidays, when over 225,000 people passed through Brno Airport in two months. Compared to 2017, seasonal transport experienced a 40% increase and Greece again dominated between destinations. Newly this year, people were able to go from Brno to Milan, and a new line to Berlin is being prepared from April this year.
The record year 2018 confirms the long-term trend of growing interest in air transport in the Czech Republic. Demand increases from year to year, especially in the summer months. In July and August, historical records fell in Brno in the number of passengers carried in one month.
"Apart from Greece (over 107,000 passengers checked-in), Bulgaria also scored points among holidaymakers with more than 62,000 passengers, and just over 51,000 passengers were checked-in on routes to Egypt. Which indicates that people are returning to previously frequently visited destinations, such as Tunis, Turkey, or Egypt," said Zdeněk Šoustal, Member of the Brno Airport Board of Directors, about the seasonal results.
However, it is not only seasonal flights that make Brno Airport the second busiest in the Czech Republic. London dominates among the regular lines. However, interest is also growing in the line between Brno and Munich. The start of the line to Milan was also relatively successful.
"I am most pleased with the growing occupancy of regular lines, which are increasingly used in both directions for business trips, and we manage to achieve very good occupancy here. At the same time, I expect that the new route to Berlin, which will start on April 1st, will increase the number of passengers handled again this year," said Milan Kratina, CEO of the Accolade Group and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Brno Airport.
The growing number of passengers and the expansion of the air network is also of great importance for the South Moravian Region, to which the airport belongs.
"I see great added value in the fact that the inhabitants of our region can easily and quickly fly not only on vacation, but also on a business trip or to study. At the same time, however, we must not forget the opposite direction. Thanks to the airport, our beautiful region is not only more accessible, but also more well-known worldwide," commented Bohumil Šimek, Governor of the South Moravian Region, on the importance of Brno Airport.
The inhabitants of South Moravia do not have to spend hours traveling to the capital or Vienna, and they have the desired destinations at their fingertips. This fact significantly supported not only tourism, but also trade or access to education abroad.
